NYRU has used the federal hydropower relicensing procedure to ensure that recreation, watershed protection, water quality, local community interests and power production are all equally represented.
As a direct result of our work, more than 40 miles of river sections, previously dewatered for decades, have had flows restored. Hundreds of miles of river now are free-flowing, running as nature intended them to. Fish protection and passage has been or will be installed on virtually all of New York’s operating hydro plants. Thousands of acres of watershed lands are now protected, the majority of which are located in our great Adirondack Park. Recreational opportunities and community involvement in watershed planning is now underway, using these newly restored assets for everyone’s benefit. We have maintained economical energy generation providing the energy that New York needs while also complying fully with modern environmental law.
We have raised the bar by which we judge the use of our rivers, and we have set high standards to maintain or improve on for those who will follow. As the law requires we have attempted to "balance" the interest on our state’s rivers, one of our greatest natural resources.
Below you will find a library of NYRU's success stories. We are gradually building this library, project by project, river by river, so please check back again in the future for additional stories.
